Is There A Tooth Fairy For Grown Ups?!?!?

Once again I come to you, the listener and blogger, for help in raising our first and only child (to date). Our 7 1/2 month old son now has two teeth with what has to be at least 40 or 50 more on the way...

The child is in pain...often. The teeth wake him from a dead sleep. The teeth wake us. The teeth wake the dog and cause her to sleep on the couch. Our son (& the rest of us) no longer sleep through the night, waking sometimes 3 & 4 times before morning. We don't want to 'orajel him' every night. I am not open to the suggestion of using alcohol on his gums. I however am up to a couple of glasses of shiraz a night). Any suggestions? I'm ready.

Kate - there is something we found that works like a charm - and it's all natural! HYLANDS TEETHING TABLETS! They melt in your mouth, just give your son 3 tablets, he will gobble them up and the relief is instantaneous! You can find them at any Eckerd or CVS or maybe even Walmart. They are around $3 per bottle and well worth 10 times that much!

Hi Kate - I have a 15 month old and feel for you! I found a few things that helped - during waking hours, try letting him chew on a wet(clean) washcloth that you let sit in the freezer for about an hour. I also found the teething rings to work well, but the kind I have weren't the little round water bubble ones - they were filled with distilled water but were a harder plastic than those bubble ones and came in various shapes (a star, a square and an oval). Also, although it is against common practice I did and still do put them in the freezer - my daughter loves it frozen!. The more he chews before bed to numb the gums the better it will befor sleeping. Last but not least, on the nights when sleeping is an issue, I resorted to using Baby motrin drops - worked like a charm - and while I waited for them to kick in she chewed a frozen teething ring. Worked every time. I tried the Hylands tablets, but they never seemed to work that well for us. One last thing - if you don't already have a crib wedge - you might try one - elevating his head takes some of the pressure off of his head and gums. Be careful the problem isn't fluid build-up or pressure in his ears. My daughter has gotten an ear infection with every tooth that gave her problems!
